April 2023 Enhancements

Welcome SOAR Customers

SOAR™ was a popular, easy to use scouting site that shut down unexpectedly last month due to a catastrophic server failure.  It provided basic membership, calendar, and email capabilities.

SOAR asked TroopWebHost to help their customers move their sites to TroopWebHost, using data that SOAR was able to recover from its server.  We quickly developed the following set of upload programs:

We posted a welcome message for new SOAR customers to introduce them to TroopWebHost.

More than 200 SOAR customers have already established a new web presence with TroopWebHost.

Thank you for choosing TroopWebHost!

Welcome TroopTrack Customers

We continue to welcome troops, crews, and packs who have decided to move their operations from TroopTrack™ to TroopWebHost.  This month we developed additional data migration tools to make this transition as easy as possible.

The following data transfer capabilities are now in place:

TroopWebHost is Safe and Reliable

Given the recent problems at SOAR, many customers have asked whether TroopWebHost is a safe and reliable hosting platform.

The answer is YES!  Here is why we can say that with complete confidence:

TroopWebHost has two dedicated servers located in a secure data center in Lansing, Michigan, managed by a company called LiquidWeb.  Both servers run the Windows Server 2019 operating system, which is kept up to date by LiquidWeb.  We have been with LiquidWeb for over a decade.  They are a stable, reputable company.

One server is dedicated to running MS SQL Server database operations.  The other is a web server.  Each server has four 480GB SSD drives in a RAID 1+0 configuration for its primary storage.  If an SSD drive fails, it will be replaced by LiquidWeb with no data loss.

We backup both servers to the D: drive on the machine.  Those backups, in turn, are each backed up to two off-site locations.  One of those is controlled by LiquidWeb, and can be used by them to do a "bare metal restore" if we had a catastrophic failure.  The other offsite backup is an independent cloud backup service that we would rely on if anything happened to LiquidWeb.

We backup our software as well as our data, so we can do a full restore to a new server if necessary.

We recently replaced both servers, so they are new, state-of-the-art machines with plenty of capacity.  We have never gone more than six years between server upgrades.

We use Microsoft Azure Cloud storage for photos and documents.  We chose their geographic redundancy option which stores two copies of each file in each of two geographically disparate data centers, so there is no need for additional backups of these resources.

Your TroopWebHost site is safe and reliable.

Calendar for Parents

Parents are now able to view events on the main calendar which they are not eligible for, if their scouts are eligible.

So, for example, if there is an event on the calendar that is limited to an "Order of the Arrow" dynamic subgroup, the parents will see this event on the main calendar if one of their scouts is a member of that dynamic subgroup.
